SO NOW, TAKE PAUSE. HOW MANY PLANTS ARE AROUND YOU AT THIS VERY MOMENT? DID YOUR NUMBER INCREASE FROM WHEN YOU FIRST COUNTED?

GET-GROWING EXERCISE: ASSOCIATION

Pick a plant-based object from your home—it could be a coffee table, your favorite shirt, or a container of tea from your aunt, for instance. You may not know anything about its origins, but take a moment to think about what the plant’s life may have been like before it took the form it now has. The product label may tell you where this plant became the table where you have breakfast, the shirt you shrug on in the morning, and the tea you sip. If you know the wood your table is made of, or the plant that contributed your shirt or your tea, you can look up where it grows and the climate it prefers. You may learn about time-honored woodworking methods, how garments traverse the globe in their journey to your closet, and the ancient intricacies of making tea. Creating these intentional narratives about our objects can help us think about the interconnectedness of the world, remind us how deeply embedded we are in nature, and encourage us to be more mindful about how we live and what we choose to surround ourselves with.
